11/4/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Thursday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 4. November 2010 19:26

Continued from 11/3/10.  While I was trying to figure out this whole breast feeding thing I tried to read all the information the hospital had given me on the subject so I could make an educated decision.  In the meantime I was pumping like crazy and wow, the keeping up with the sanitary factor for my breast pump was RIDICULOUS.  You have to wash all the items needed for your breast pump after every pumping!  Luckily I have an amazing husband who contributed by cleaning the items almost every time.  I would get frustrated because while my husband slept I was getting up every 3 hours to pump and wash the equipment (this week while my son was in the Special Care Nursery was supposed to be when I got some sleep!).  Originally I thought I just wouldn't pump during the nighttime and FJ could get formula then.  Oh boy was I wrong!  If you don't pump approximately every 3 hours you risk engorgement or worse, infecting a duct in your breast, either of which is supposed to be INCREDIBLY painful!  Engorgement is when your breasts become swollen from not pumping and they feel like huge rocks inside.  They need ice packs to take down the swelling and begin producing milk from these ducts again.  As our son got better, the SCN (Special Care Nursery) nurse called lactation to try breast feeding again.  It was the worst experience ever for me!  To be continued...
